Drafting/Pre-Engineering

NRCC Dual Enrollment - Total 9 Credit Hours (2 years)

Drafting is a career where you create drawings with dimensions so mechanical parts, welded parts, and houses can be built.  Students create drawings for students in the Machine Shop, Welding, and Building Trades.

First year: First and second six weeks you will be learning terminology the basics of manual Drafting.  This includes lettering, sketching, read scales, blueprint reading, line quality, neatness, and geometrical construction.  By the first of December students will move into the CAD room know as (Computer-Aided Drafting).  Students learn to use the software AutoCAD.  This is where students will be able to apply what they have learned in manual drafting by using the computer to create drawings.  Last six weeks students design a bumper system for a car to protect their driver.

Second year: Seniors will be creating a complete set of Architectural plans (House Plans) the first semester of their school year.  This is done using the CAD software which is in 3D.  This allows students to view their house from all angles. The software 3D Viz can be used to create a virtual walkthrough.
The second semester students will be using the software called Inventor, which is a 3D software to create mechanical parts.  Last six weeks students design their own final project.  Designs in the past have been: Robots, Catapult, Model houses, Interior Design projects, 3D Animation

Student accomplishments: Past ten years my students have competed at the SkillsUSA state competition. During the years 2002-03 I've had the honor of three students (Matthew Galliher, Jessica Manning, and Kevin Law) to compete at the National SkillsUSA level. Also during the school year of 2005-06 two students (Chad Butler & Shane Slaughter) competed at the National Skills USA level. Becky St. Leger designed the War Memorial Veterans Park located in Narrows, VA. Shane Slaughter and Alicia St. Clair designed the sign for the park. Students in the class of 2007 worked with the town of Narrows to Design a Skateboard park.
